Every student at the Greater Washington Dance Center will participate in the Winter Demonstration and the Studio Recital at the end of the year. The Winter Demonstration offers parents and family members the opportunity to observe their dancer in class. Special dances will be prepared for a mini-performance within the classes. The Studio Recital will be held in June. This is a low-key, low-cost, low-stress performance in which every class will participate. Parents, family and close friends are invited to attend. For many dancers, this may be their first experience stepping onto a stage. We work hard to make this a fun and relaxing event for all to enjoy.
The GWDC has two resident companies. Festival Ballet of Virginia is a non-profit, high quality, pre-professional ballet company dedicated to inspiring excellence and infusing passion in dancers and audience members. Motion X Dance DC is our resident non-profit, professional modern company which will focus on supporting the development of new choreographers through artistic thought and movement experimentation. Motion X Dance DC will audition for dancers on a project by project basis. Dancers may audition for Festival Ballet of Virginia at the beginning of each school year. In addition to mandatory classes, members of the companies will be expected to attend rehearsals and choreography sessions. Additionally, the dancers of both groups will participate in community outreach programs.
Dancers who are not members of the Festival Ballet of Virginia or Motion X Dance DC, but wish a deeper performance experience may audition for supporting roles in the performances of our resident companies. Company members will fill all of the primary roles in these productions, however, there may be opportunities for dancers not in the company to participate. Look for further information in our announcements section of this website or at the studio.
