Company Requirements:
Classes
- Company members are required to take classes and participate in rehearsals at GWDC.
- Class Attendance is vital in maintaining a student’s mastery of dance technique. Dance is a physical activity that requires consistent weekly training to establish muscle strength and muscle memory. Classical ballet training is a highly specialized technique that requires excellent instruction by a knowledgeable teacher and committed attendance by the student in order to achieve the desired results.
- Junior company members are required to take a minimum of two ballet classes per week plus either modern or jazz.
- Senior company members are required to take a minimum of four ballet classes per week. (Apprentice company members are required to take a minimum of three ballet classes per week). As a dancer gets further in their training, daily ballet classes are strongly encouraged. Additionally, modern and jazz classes are strongly encouraged as much of the FBV rep will include works in these genres.
- Adult company members are required to take a minimum of three ballet classes per week, two of which should be en pointe.
- Rehearsals are mostly only held on Saturdays. We request that all dancers reserve Saturdays from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM for Festival Ballet Virginia.
- It is extremely important for company members to attend all rehearsals they are scheduled for. It is imperative that all cast members be present at every rehearsal to achieve the level necessary for public performance. Dancers who consistently miss rehearsals will risk losing their place in the company.
- Dancers in the Junior and Senior Companies are required to continue their dance training in a summer intensive program. The Greater Washington Dance Center offers a multi-week Summer Intensive program designed to challenge the dancers' ballet, modern and jazz technique.
- All company members must dance a minimum of three weeks during the summer months. However, all dancers are encouraged to dance as much as possible during the summer to maintain strength and to continue their technical progress.
- There will be a mandatory Nutcracker workshop for all company members August 12-16.
- Adult dancers are required to study consistently through the summer.
- The membership fee is $500 per year and is due by June 1, 2023. Additionally, there is a $150 costume fee per production. These fees will be assessed during the season.
- Each company member will be required to sign a “contract” which outlines expectations regarding class and rehearsal attendance and conduct.
- Additionally, parents will need to sign a parent information sheet. These documents are also due by June 1, 2024
